A Promise Fulfilled! A Dream Recognized

Dear Gabrielle,

A promise fulfilled!  A Dream Recognized!

I will never forget how this exact moment changed the course of everything!

I remember sitting with you on the corner of your bed talking about your feelings of being the Big Sister in our family that every single day faces the varying dynamics of Autism with your little sister. If you recall this moment, we discovered that your commitment to your role in our Family as “Big Sister” to a sister that was not exactly your vision of how you imagined having a sister, when you planned for her arrival years ago. Your frustrations of not having a sister hug you on demand, not play dolls like you wanted to do it, sometimes even scream at you, and sometimes even take time from you with mom and dad were all part of this conversation.

What you and I discovered in this moment together was your amazing ability at just 8 years old to look past these frustrations and find the “Silver Lining” in it all!  It seemed that you in this moment also realized that all of your great qualities were destined for being a sister that could look past often frustrating qualities of having a younger sibling with Autism. You chose to move forward in finding solutions in your relationship together. You did this by understanding each other’s good and bad qualities and began building off of those, one step at a time. You also knew you were not alone and that there were tons and tons of other Brothers and Sisters that also had these same feelings in their own families.

There is Something I want you to know on the Eve of Sibling Day Celebration….

I have had many dreams and many fears in my life, but I have learned through you to conquer my fears because of the inspiration you are giving me to help fulfill a vision of your dreams for the future of your community and beyond.  The invariable mark you are leaving as a result of a vision for all families that have brothers or sisters with special needs like you is remarkable.

I have learned through this journey with you and your sister that embracing the moments of sunshine that comes with every day from you and her will only allow us all to keep believing and pursuing a life of bright beginnings together every single day. You have helped me to realize that we all have our own life to pursue, our own kind of dream to be destined for, and we all have a power within us to make wishes come true, as long as we keep believing!

You are an inspiration to me at just 8 years old, you are a pillar of strength to not ever let dreams dwindle, you have a commitment to others like no other, and you have an amazing ability to nurse everyone through bad days until they are brought into sunshine and light.

Every great dream begins with a inspiration just like you. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars!

Tomorrow July 16, 2011 your dream of bringing families together just like yours for a moment of fun and excitement is coming true.

I love you BIG TIME! I hope you enjoy it!
